Review, Refresh or Renew
Which approach is right for me?
To support staff with embedding AI within their assessments, we first need to consider the relevance and impact that this will have on the (re)design process. AI can enhance and support the learning journey when used as part of the learning process as well as being used in line with current guidance and policies.
However, just because AI is available doesn’t mean that it is suitable or necessary for all assessments and does not mean that assessments have to be fully redesigned to accommodate adding AI. To guide this, we have used the Review, Refresh, Renew approach to help you explore the accommodations that AI can provide and some simple ideas about how to embed within your course at a variety of levels.
Review: The review stage is designed to enable you to evaluate your current assessment and identify any potential challenges that may be impacted by AI. This shouldn’t involve any major changes to your course and is seen as a short-term approach.
Refresh: Refresh focuses on identifying opportunities for AI to be added in part to your current assessment methodologies. This approach isn’t designed to change or adapt learning outcomes, and the AI is added as an additional way for learners to use tools to support them during the assessment creation process.
Renew: Renew focuses on redesigning your current approach with a specific AI and Authentic Assessment angle embedded. This usually requires more in-depth discussion and potentially may mean a modification to the course.
